One of my ongoing teaching activities is to work with two groups of children/teenagers at a Music Theatre Class which is part of a Dance School based in Crowborough, East Sussex. This is great fun, and working in a group can give many opportunities to work on musicianship and technique which would be difficult in a 1 to 1 situation.
A group session would usually start with a warm up – with the opportunity to introduce a bit a technique in a fun way without all the jargon! Then there would be some group exercises which focus on various areas of musicianship such as pitching, listening skills and rhythm.
The rest of the session would then be taken up with a singing task. This would give opportunities for solo singing (for those who want to!), harmonisation, and the development of a unique group arrangement of a well known piece! This can be very satisfying and can help develop confidence and pride in new found abilities.
